The third shelter: girls
14 August 2009 Peduli Anak Foundation is now home for 45 boys and 17 girls. At the moment, the girls are sharing our first shelter with the little boys. Even though they have their own room, sometimes it is difficult to have their privacy with the little boys running around everywhere. They often spend their time playing in the room because that’s where they feel free from worry and awkwardness of being among the boys. We believe it is very important for the girls to have their private living arrangement, away from the boys, because these girls have gloomy life experience. Many of them are victims of sexual abuse and violence. By building a new shelter for girls only, we provide a proper living arrangement where the girls would feel more relaxed and safe to do their daily activities. Therefore, we used up money from a lot of one-off donations to start building the girls’ shelter. At the moment, the construction is in progress and it will take 3 months until the building is ready to be occupied. Total cost for the shelter construction is € 13,000. The shelter has 6 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 small kitchen, and 2 open spaces. It can accommodate 30 girls, divided into 5 bedrooms. There is also a counselor’s bedroom for around the clock supervision. Once the shelter is finished, another task awaits. We need to furnish it with these following items: 15 bunk beds (± € 100 each), a dinner table (± € 400), 35 chairs (± € 20 each), and 5 closets (± € 200 each). Total cost for furniture is about € 3600. Unfortunately, right now we are in dire need of sponsors who would help us to furnish the shelter. In the meantime, we would like to extend our gratitude for these following individuals and companies who have generously supported the construction of our new shelter:
